Database and Research Resources

The Kettle Run Library offers a robust menu of databases and research assistance for its students.  

ALL OF THESE MAY BE ACCESSED IN EACH STUDENT'S SCHOOLOGY ACCOUNT.

Databases are listed in alphabetical order with a brief description of each.  

America in the 20th Century: This abundantly illustrated resource charts the decade-by-decade progress of the United States through the volatile twentieth century. 

American History Online: This resource covers more than 500 years of political, military, social and cultural American history.

Ancient and Medieval History Online: Covering nine civilizations from prehistory through the 1500s, this resource covers ancient Egypt, ancient Mesopotamia, ancient Greece, ancient and medieval Africa, medieval Europe, the Americas, ancient and medieval Asia, and the Islamic Empire.

Ancient and Medieval World: This database examines world history from the emergence of the earliest humans about two million years ago through the end of the Middle Ages.

Britannica School: This is Encyclopedia Britannica's online database for schools. The site offers substantial research support for students in elementary through high school, as well as instructional scaffolding for teachers. 

Gale eBooks: Gale eBooks is a database of encyclopedias and specialized reference source for multidisciplinary research.  These reference materials were once accessible only in print in the library, but through this database, you can access them online 24/7.

Gale in Context- High School: This link opens a page with a variety of databases which you may use to research current events, people, popular culture, business and industry trends, the arts and sciences, sports, hobbies, and more.

Gale in Context-Science: This database covers hundreds of today's most significant science topics.  Magazine articles, academic journals, news articles, experiments, images, videos, audio files and vetted websites are all easily searchable.

Gale in Context-U.S.History: Provides a complete overview of our nation's past that covers the most studied events, decades, conflicts, wars, political and cultural movements, and people.

Gale in Context-World History: Provides contextual information on hundreds of the most significant people, events and topics in World History utilizing magazines, academic journals, news articles, primary source documents, images, videos, audio files and links to vetted websites.

Gods, Goddesses, and Mythology: This unique far-reaching resource explores prehistoric and classical gods and goddesses as well as contemporary myths found in literature and popular culture.

JSTOR: This link provides access to more than 12 million academic journal articles, books, and primary sources in 75 disciplines.

JSTOR Global Plants: This is an online collection that brings together content, tools, and people interested in plant science.

Modern World History: This database includes fully hyperlinked subject entries, biographies, images and videos, maps and charts, primary sources, and timelines covering world history from the mid-15th century to the present.

Occupational Outlook Handbook: For hundreds of different types of jobs, the Occupational Outlook Handbook tells you the training and education needed, how much you can earn, the projected job market, what workers do on the job, and the working conditions.

Science Online: For information, articles, experiments, images, videos and animations on the subjects of astronomy, biology, chemistry, computer science, earth science, environmental science, forensic science, marine science, mathematics, physics, and weather and climate, this is your resource!

SIRS Knowledge Source: SIRS Knowledge Source contains several databases with comprehensive coverage of social issues, historical and government documents, and current perspectives on the arts and humanities.  For "hot topic research", this is one-stop shopping!

Teen Health and Wellness: This award-winning, critically acclaimed online resource provides students with nonjudgemental, straightforward, curricular information on diseases, drugs, alcohol, nutrition, mental health, suicide, bullying, green living, financial literacy, and more.

Virginia Career View: Virginia Career View (Vital Information for Education and Work) is recognized as the Commonwealth's career information delivery system for all Virginians, grades K-Adult.  Its mission is to inform, encourage, and support the education and career development of the people of Virginia.

World News Digest:  World News Digest is packed with more than 300,000 original articles from 1940 to today.  These include overviews of historical events, country profiles, historical documents, biographies, research features, special reports, and editorial cartoons.

World Geography and Culture Online: World Geography and Culture is the definitive resource for the study of countries, cultures, and geographical concepts and skills. Every country of the world is profiled in depth, covering all aspects of its geography, history, society, and culture. At-a-glance information, maps and flags, videos, images, gazetteer entries, biographies of famous people, a timeline, and current news supplement each country's profile. Comprehensive entries about the U.S. states are also available.
